I’ve always found August to be a strange month. As many of us pack our suitcases and happily head off on our summer holidays, normal life for those left behind becomes suddenly suspended. Towns, I find, are often deserted; activities you might normally take part in – gym classes, baby groups etc. – are now either sporadic in number or have stopped altogether; and businesses are continually short staffed as half of their workforce take annual leave at the same time.
I, for one, never book a holiday during the eighth month of the year because, as someone who is neither a teacher, a school-aged child or a parent of school-aged children, why on earth would I want to pay over-the-odds for a trip that’ll be considerably cheaper (unfairly so, I might add) once the new academic year begins?! As such, August becomes a month where, rather than relaxing and taking a well-deserved break like the rest of the population, I feel like I am in a constant state of limbo – waiting for life to begin again, looking ahead to September rather than enjoying the month I’m in now.
This year, I’m trying really hard to break the cycle and subsequently August’s content reflects what I feel is the ad hoc nature of the month! I have a few ideas in the pipeline for content throughout August, but rather than cement it in stone (or in publishable posts!) I’m going to give you a brief overview of the kind of things I’m hoping to write whilst also focusing on giving myself a little rest time. And so, here it is, a run down of what to (perhaps/maybe/potentially) expect over the next few weeks on My Bellyful:
Afternoon Tea Week begins on August 14th and as self-imposed rest is the name of the game in August, what better way to force myself into a blissfully relaxed state than with a spot of afternoon tea?! Don’t ask me how, where or when, but at some point over the next few weeks I should (hopefully) be stuffing my face with small sandwiches and brushing crumbs off my notepad!
Finally, I want to talk about something I’ve not really discussed before on My Bellyful and that’s motherhood. Being a mum is a huge part of my life and as my husband I have taken a slightly alternative route into parenthood, I feel it’s something I should address here on My Bellyful. However, this is an incredibly personal topic for me and so I’m going to start small. Last month, I spoke about the pressure on us all to look ‘summer body ready’ throughout the summer months, but what I didn’t mention is that, since I became a mum, I’m pretty much wearing the same stain-ridden clothes everyday and my make-up bag has never been opened so infrequently! Therefore, my first parenting post will be all about my own personal ‘messy mum’ look!!
So that’s August in a tea/cake/small sandwich-filled nutshell! Of course, some of this content may never actually materialise and some of it might not pop up until several months down the line, but these are the plans and, with a bit of luck, I’ll be able to write and rest at the same time!
